Mikhail Hallak / Coaching
As a former solo pianist, I came to lyric music by accident but most importantly by falling in love with both operatic and song repertoire. As the son of a French literature professor, I grew up surrounded by words of incredible potency. So it was a natural step for me to move to the lyric repertoire, the only medium that can combine the beauty of a voice with words and feelings of extraordinary depth. As a coach I believe that we can address many singing issues through diction. Too often diction and vowel sounds are incorrectly taught and this can result in inappropriate regionalized diction and can create problems for the singer. This is particularly the case for French.
My responsibility as a coach is to be a true enabler and student advocate, sharing the information and the tools that will help a singer of any level polish their craft. It is also to be demanding so that no mistakes are overlooked while also being caring, and striving for the highest level any singer can achieve.
I don’t believe in dependency but rather in helping and empowering singers to take their own steps and make their own decisions once provided with the correct ‘tools’ and information.
